Photo

I'm not sure of the encyclopedic value of adding this photo to the article. My initial instinct is that it does not add sufficient information to warrant inclusion. What does everyone think? isaacl (talk) 05:23, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you. There may be times when gravestone photos are all that's available to illustrate an article, but in this case we have actual photos available of the person in question. He's famous for being alive, not for being buried. If additional photos are desired, perhaps one in academic garb and one presiding in his baseball capacity would be more appropriate. - Nunh-huh 05:58, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A. Bartlett Giamatti → Bart Giamatti – Per WP:COMMONNAME. Although "A. Bartlett" is often used in lists and memorials, "Bart" appears to be the more common usage, used in headlines by the New York Times Magazine,ABC News, the Washington Post, and ESPN. More tellingly for me, Major League Baseball's humanitarian award is named the Bart Giamatti Award, which is one place I'd expect the more formal name to be used. And even where he is introduced as "Bartlett," it's often "Bart" on the second mention.

Bart Giamatti → A. Bartlett Giamatti – I disagree with the previous rationale on moving the article to "Bart Giamatti"; I believe that "A. Bartlett Giamatti" is the WP:COMMONNAME.

  • "A. Bartlett Giamatti" consistently beats "Bart Giamatti" by a significant margin on Ngrams [1].
  • The previous move cited The New York Times, ABC News, The Washington Post, and ESPN, except that:
    • There are 866 results for "A. Bartlett Giamatti" [2] vs. 277 results for "Bart Giamatti" [3] when searching on The New York Times's website;
    • There are ~290 results for "A. Bartlett Giamatti" [4] vs. ~120 results for "Bart Giamatti" [5] on The Washington Post's website;
    • The ABC News [6] and ESPN articles [7] are actually the same non-independent obituary by Giamatti's eldest son (WP:COMMONNAME is based on independent sources); it makes sense that Giamatti's son would refer to his father by a nickname.
  • Giamatti called himself "A. Bartlett Giamatti" on the books he wrote [8].
  • Both the official list of MLB Commissioners [9] and Yale University's list of presidents [10] call him "A. Bartlett Giamatti".
  • Google Trends is not a good indication of WP:COMMONNAME, which should depend on reliable sources. Malerisch (talk) 07:10, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
